Aquarium

The aquarium, which is a star attraction of the zoo, includes freshwater, marine and brackish water fish and was established as far back as 30 years.

Not only fish species but also corals, molluscans, echinodermates and arthropods have occupied in 22 big tanks. Their numbers fluctuate by their natural breeding in the tank itself, and also display colonization, symbiosis, competition and all behavior patterns which occur in the natural habitats.

There are many varieties of fish including endemics and very rare varieties have been bred in this aquarium and in the zoo ponds.

 
  Sea Fish
The disparity of body shapes, colour patterns and even living patterns of fishes are found in coral reefs around Sri Lanka. Many varieties of sea fishes are exhibited in the aquarium. You will be found your favorite fish in this fascinating aquarium and it is a window in to the magnificent life of the oceans.

Invertebrates
Red knobbed Star Fish (Protoreaster lincki )

The body is dorso-ventrally flattened and consists of a central disc from which radiated out five arms. They are slow moving on the sea bottom feeding on bivalves.

Endemic Fish Tanks
There are 44 fishes identified as endemic to Sri Lanka. Different  varieties of endemic fishes exhibited in the aquarium.
