All research activities which related to the zoo are based on animals and their environment in order to understand the behaviour and habitat relationships of animals.
These activities are scooped out on various purposes such as educational purposes, conservation purposes etc. The zoo is currently involved in many research and captive breeding projects.
These include:-
  1. A preliminary investigation on the cobra repellent activity of Eryngium foetidium (in collaboration with dept. of chem. University of Ruhuna and University of Kelaniya)
  2. Captive care and breeding of pangolin – Mannis crassicaudata
  3. Stress behaviour of Melursus ursinus (Sri Lankan Sloth bear) collaboration with University of Rajarata.
  4. Defication rate of Srilankan sambhar.
  5. Controlling of  rat (Rattus rattus) population in the Zoo.
  6. Faecal survey on zoo animals in collaboration with Department of Zoology, University of Colombo.
Carrying on :–
  1. Developmental and endocrinological changes associated with puberty and sexual maturity in female elephant.
  2. Study of endocrine and metabolic profiles and behavioural patterns during oestrus cycle, gestation parturition and postpartum period of Asiatic elephant in captivity, in collaboration with Smithzonian institution U.S.A. and University of Peradeniya.
Proposed :–
  1. Abundance of Malpuluta kretseri in Kalu river basin.
  2. Composition of fishes, invertebrates, water insects , amphibians, reptiles in the downstream of Bolgoda river basin.
  3. Study on habitat use and ranging patterns of Spot-Billed pelican (Pelicanns philippensis) associated with Dehiwala Zoological Gardens Sri Lanka.
